As we grow older many challenges occur and coping with these changes can become stressful.  As you get older and begin to have health issues, and realize you might not be able to do everything as well as you once could can become frustrating and depressing. Some older adults feel there is little appreciation for their skills and wisdom, and even admit that they sometimes feel invisible. When you look in the mirror you don’t see the person you used to be, or have been suffering from a longstanding illness, disability, or memory loss, it can really take a bite out of your self-esteem. However, there are simple activities you can do to boost your confidence:

Be social – Whether it’s playing golf, playing bridge, or getting together for dinner, having those you care about around you and engaging with them is very important at any age. A growing use and comfort with technology also offers new opportunities to reduce isolation, and to build connections and a sense of community.

Be a volunteer – Helping others is a great way to make you feel good about yourself. If there is a cause you’re passionate about, consider giving a little of your time to it.

Be good to yourself – When you look good you feel good. Get up, get cleaned up, and get dressed as if you are going out to socialize even if you aren’t. You’ll find that your opinion of yourself becomes more positive. And if you are having trouble having good hygiene, a caregiver can help with personal care.

Be mindful of what you eat– The truth is, when you eat healthy you feel better about yourself.

Be active– When you exercise regularly that can help you let go of negative thoughts and increase body strength. Having a strong and fit body will allow you to move easier, reduce the possibility of falls, and allow you to take care of yourself for longer.

There are many ways to feel better about yourself and gain a whole new outlook on life. All it takes is a little effort, and support. If you’re feeling down on yourself, it is especially important to talk to someone. Call Home Care Solutions anytime 504-828-0900.
